Nearly 1 in 2 US families struggle to afford diapers.
In Prince George's County alone, more than 15,000 babies each year go without the diapers and hygiene items they need to stay clean, dry, and healthy. Essential items like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and menstrual supplies are out of reach for many families navigating the daily challenges of parenting in poverty.
To make matters worse, diapers and most other hygiene items are not covered by common government assistance programs like WIC or SNAP. This forces caregivers to make impossible choices between buying diapers and paying for rent, food, or utilities.
At Greater DC Diaper Bank (GDCDB), we believe everyone deserves to be clean. That's why we give free hygiene supplies to more than 46,000 babies and their families across DC, Maryland, and Virginia each year, including diapers, wipes, soap, shampoo, period products, adult incontinence supplies, soap, toothbrushes, and more. We are proud to have supported Prince George's babies and families for the last 15 years.
Our work is made possible through a network of 87 community partners throughout the region—from social service agencies and mutual aid groups to local governments and faith-based organizations. These partners distribute GDCDB products while connecting families to the wraparound services they provide, such as food assistance, housing support, and healthcare.
And, this model works. Families receiving GDCDB products are more likely to engage in other services, stay connected to providers longer, and report reduced stress levels—a vital improvement in the face of overwhelming need and unprecedented levels of parental stress.
Since our founding in 2010, GDCDB has provided more than 55 million diapers across 375 zip codes. We're one of the oldest diaper banks in the country and the largest in Greater DC. No other local organization provides diapers and hygiene items at our scale.
Thanks to our strong regional purchasing power, we’re able to buy and distribute two diapers for the cost of one in stores—making every dollar stretch further to meet urgent needs.
Of the families we reach:
- 98% have annual incomes under $50,000
- 80% live on less than $20,000 each year
- 72% report not having enough diapers to meet their baby’s needs (far above the 48% national average)
- 94% of families receiving our products are families of color
